War EK1 / Cased & Marked L/50 / Named & Identified

Hi Everyone:

Just wanted to show one of my recent acquisitions from the MAX Show. This cross came out of Tim Calvert's collection.

It is inscribed with rank "Oblt" at top and surname "Noetzel" underneath. Below the surname is inscribed "18789 D" and I immediately thought that is a Feldpost number. So when I got home I did a little research online and found an Oberleutnant Gerhard Noetzel was with (probably commanded) Batterie 6 of Artillerie Regiment 207 and the Feldpost for that batterie matches EXACTLY what is inscribed on the cross. This batterie was eventually transferred to the 281st Infanterie Division with the same Feldpost number.

Needless to say, I was really excited to identify the named recipient of this EK1! It opens the door for more research and, hopefully, more information on Oblt. Noetzel.

I would be interested to hear any and all comments. Thanks so much!

Jonathan

Hi Douglas, thanks so much for commenting. The case has seen better days. I am thinking of looking for an original LDO case to match it up with.

Why? If that's it's original case then leave it be.

I would like to think that’s its original case but weren’t L/50 crosses shipped in LDO marked cases? Maybe I am mistaken?
