Default Oil painting - Which Regiment?

Would anyone care to take a guess at which Regiment this guy served with?

I'm a little dubious as to whether the painting itself is of the period but photos can be deceptive so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

Hi Ben,

Rather difficult. I would say: Oberleutnant Prussian Infantry. Now the only way to id him further would be the shoulder board. He seem to have a crown with a smudge for a cypher. The piping on the board seem to be black or perhaps blue but strangely enough on white underlay. Only three regiments have black piping and only one of those on white: LKR1 but only after 1915. I do not think the frock coat saw much wear after WWI started.

Also that board should be a sew in board and therefore the white should border the shoulder seam and not show the black piping at the end of the board. That is incorrect.

PS: What is this odd area here? Seems a bit amateurish.

Thanks for the identification, much appreciated.

I'm not sure what that area is. There is also a strange dark smudge to the left of his cheek. Maybe it's been over-painted for some reason..
