Hi again all you Kurskreisel followers
Had anyone seen this on eBay ?.

Looks like a pile of rust but hopefully we all know what it is, but can anyone identify the vehicle it came from ? the actual mount is different and I guess specific to it's host.
Good to be back, regards Ian.

Wild guess, but either a Panzer III or a Panzer IV?

The inside of Bovington's III N:

Here is a detail shot from the inside of an early IV driver's area:

Interesting pictures mate.
Depends on whether the eBay mount / frame / bracket has been turned back to front or upside down, as we see it in the pictures it could not really be for either, the locating spheres are not in the same position as either of the two you have posted, it could easily be turned of course, but if it has come out of a vehicle as it is then is doesn't match up.
Cheers again .. Ian

Evening all
I post this image as it's one I've bought from ..online .
It's not necessarily a first gen copy, but interesting to show the Power supply for the Gyro in a .. I had the panzer type but I've forgotten it now it's a repair or recovery version.

Default KU3 in Bergepanzer III ?

Apparently it's marked as a Bergepanzer III, but with some differences
The question is where is the Gyrokompass

I imagine it would be an older model PzKpfw III, possibly not fit for combat use, so transformed into a Bergepanzer. When the turret and superstructure were removed they also removed the Gyrocompass with them, but seems they didn't remove the power supply.

I find it difficult to search online for images of such things..does anyone know if the position of the Ku3 you see here is correct in the unmolested Panzer 3 ?.

There are two variations for the placement of the gyrocompass in the Pz III, dependent on whether the vehicle was equipped with storage for MG saddle drums or with "Gurtsäcken". The KU3 was placed on the floor behind the driver's seat in both variations.

In the Pz II the KU3 was build neatly under the floor while in the Pz IV it was placed on the sidewall next to the steering brake.

Did all PzKpfw III and IV have a Gyrocompass? How about StuGs?

All tanks were prepared so that the gyrocompass could be installed. I suspect they were only fitted when the tactical need arose. The gyrocompass was particularly advantageous in open, featureless terrain so I suspect they were primarily used in the North African and Russian campaigns.

I can not find any references to the use in Stugs; the original tactical use of the Stug was as a close infantry cooperation vehicle controlled from a Sd.Kfz 253 so it would not have required a gyrocompass. Perhaps those Stugs used on the flanks of the "Panzerkeil" during the Kursk offensive were fitted with gyrocompasses but I suspect it was an exception rather than a rule.

regards,

Funksammler
