Thanks for added pics. Signals still for me and very nice to see a one-look original used strap as there has been a fleet of fakes and mint tropical straps lately....

A big thanks to everyone for the inputs

I'll take a better look on the unfaded parts and see if it shows any other shade of yellow than lemon-yellow.

At last an original strap to enjoy. Thanks.

For me signals branch of service.

The marked areas reveal the real color IMO.

It arrived yesterday. Here is another couple photos taken in outdoor daylight. To my surprise it's an early Recon, not a Signals strap...and very sun faded. The photo of the upper tongue shows the original dark olive color/shade of the strap where it joins the green tongue. Then the upper strap itself shows the results of being in the Afrikan sun. Also around the buttonhole you can see the original darker olive in the buttons shadow.

And a possible correction. Had said that the added tresse indicated a battlefield promotion. Maybe not the case this time. As it was very hard to find senior NCO Kav tropical straps, its possible that the Feldwebel had to add the tresse and pip himself at the time he received the tropical NCO straps & kit to represent his actual rank at that time.

As always all comments welcome ?

Well done Tim,

that was exactly what I was seeing on my monitor. Golden yellow recon, the brighter type of yellow which seems to fade a lot if exposed to Afrika/ tropical sun.

Recently we made a big study of this challenge here in NZ by comparing veteran brought back German tropical straps with yellow piping. Our conclusion is that many of the yellow piped examples fade a lot. Certain Recon golden yellows go a lot lighter when they have been exposed to harsh sun. Equally, some signal Lemon yellows fade to an almost white shade with only a hint of yellow left on the exposed areas. The key and way of identifying the correct waffenfarbe colour, is to find and compare an unexposed area of piping.

This said, we had far more signal straps that recon straps to study but some faded Recon yellow straps are being incorrectly identified as Signals.

You now have a very, very rare German tropical strap. In fact one of the rarest to try and find

Chris

It is rare as for sure, at this stage it could be the only known one of that particular rank for Recon golden yellow (Armored Cars) to have survived the war. When we undertook our study, we were struggling to find WH tropical shoulder boards piped in golden yellow of any rank to compare with. We had to resort to making comparison with golden yellow bottle green, field-grey, LW, M44 and black shoulder boards to get a sufficient sample and range of hues for the golden yellow Waffenfarbe.

Overall, basically it breaks down into two main groupings of hues for "Recon" yellow;

(1) a brighter golden sunshine yellow that appears to be susceptible to fading
(2) a browner honey yellow that holds it colour better than (1)

I can not stress enough, how rare and valuable the strap Tim has aquired from you is. However, this thread may bring more out of the woodwork and it would be worth any collector re-visting/ re-checking what they have classified as WH Signal yellow among their tropical boards,

Chris
