Default Kfz 15 Nachrichtenwagen question

Hello,

Could anyone pls explain me what is the use of the long tubes carried by some communication vehicles on the sides? They sometimes are called "Mastrohre", or "zweiteiligen Drahtgabel' but what is their function?

And are these only carried by Kfz 15 radio cars (Funkwagens) or also communications (Nachrichtenwagen) Kfz15s?

Thanks in advance.

Radio cars had antenna masts, telephone vehicles had cable poles. The photograph shows a pre-war telephone vehicle, the soldier carries a cable pole or "Drahtgabel", this was used to hang the telephone cable into trees. There were different types of cable poles, a portable three part unit carried with the "Fernsprechtornister" and a heavier two part unit carried on vehicles. So the caption is right identifying this as a Zweiteiligen Drahtgabel".

The type of antennas carried on radio vehicles depended on the Kfz-type and type of radios fitted. Light radio vehicles such as the Kfz 2 and Kfz 15 normally did not carry antenna masts; the Kfz 16 had a special compartment over the chassis to fit a "Steckmast". Kfz 17 and Kfz 17/1 also have a compartment to store a Steckmast, in addition to any Kurbelmast fitted to the vehicle. Most of the larger radio vehicle carry extensive antenna equipment.

Thanks. So any vehicle with poles mean telephone car. Do you have any of you detail photos of the poles? I am most interested in seeing how they were. Thanks.

I also seek the handbook (Beladeplan) of the Nachrichten Kfz15s and the equipment carried particularly by the prewar Kfz 15 types (Horch 830, Wanderer W11...) I can not find a copy nowhere but I assume this manual existed back then?

Any ideas where to find it?

Regards,

R.

This website has a good line drawing: http://www.dws-xip.pl/encyklopedia/druttel-de/

Pre-war Beladepläne will be difficult to find, I think I have seen one or two telephone related ones in my time so there must be a few around somewhere....

Hi,

Thanks.

The Beladeplan of the early Kfz 15 phone car is Dienstvorschrift L. Dv. 946

But I can't find it, not in the NARA files neither. Unfortunately.

You should also be looking for the "Gerätenachweise" in the D700 series, these give a detailed description of the telephone equipment carried by different troops in different vehicles.
