The man to the right has the shoulder strap of the Württemberg I.R.124. The badge sure looks like an allied cockade with a service chevron. Couldn't be in 1914, I guess, but I don't recognize it as anything German I've ever seen before.

The message on the reverse gives absolutely no further clues.

Hallo Chip!
Looking at it closer it seems like it may be a printed ribbon, and not necessarily an enamel pin. I was thinking a KUK badge, but do see that cockade and what you see as a chevron seems like a laurel, possibly?

Pauke, seeing it is a Lazarett, that mixes things up a bit as well--no guarantee this man is among trench comrades. Hoped for some clue based on postmark or content that may have revealed a sector or affiliation that could help.

An actual high res SCAN could make the detail on that badge/ribbon clearer, if you have access, even at a library. I work for an art publisher, and you would be amazed the detail we get with scanners.

Fritz.

Looks something in the style of those patriotic/shooting pins/ribbons.
