Default Deutsche Reichsbahn Silverware

I recently acquired this through a newspaper ad (purchased from the vet's son.) I wasn't sure exactly what it was at first, but some research has proven very interesting.
This is a wine bottle holder measuring 12 inches across. The #232 on the bottom apparently corresponds to the Reichsbahn train car #. #232 was a guest car on Hitler's train.

Very cool. It seems odd they would have a car number on the bottom. I would have guessed it was a makers mark.

By the way Alpaca is aka German Silver or Nickel Silver. It contains no real silver. Not sure what alloy they used but typically it is about 75%copper and 25% Nickel. It can contain a small amount of Tin, Zinc, or cadmium.

There seems to be a great deal of "Hitler's train" table service laying around this country. I had a call about some last year and the owner insisted it was Hitler's after finding "reference" to it on Snyder's web site. Is there any period documentation identifying the numbers on these service pieces as corresponding to Hitler train numbers, rather than inventory numbers of the manufacturer or the DR?

I am also curious to see period documentation that would indicate a connection between these numbers and railway car numbers, or a list that indicates the car numbers of all the Reichsbahn trains and to which train each car was assigned.

So would the #232 indicate car #232 that apparently wasn't in his train, or is it supposed to be short-hand for #10232? Or #8232? Huh? And again, is there any period documentation associating the numbers found on the bottoms of a plate service with a particular train car? Is there anything more substantive than the Snyder web site smoke and mirrors?

I see the list. 232 for wagon 10232. What number for wagon 9232? Or 8232? Or 11232?
I would like to read the source of your list and the info on how the silver plate is stamped. Source?

Hello,

I am going to have to agree with Joe about this. There were literally tons of DR silverware made during the Third Reich. If someone could provide a source for the information about the car number corresponding with certain cars on Hitler's Sonderzug Amerika, it would put to rest much of the speculation.

I really do hope your items do turn out to be from AH's guest, sleeping car.
Regardless, the silver is very nice and desireable, even if you can't find documentation.

What really gives me doubts though, is this; Hilter had personalized table and silver setting for each of his living quarters, even the major Hotels that Hitler stayed in had a special setting(s) with the Fuehrer's initials, usually with different grades as well. One would think that a special train for Hitler to also have personalized settings as well. I do hope I am wrong for your sake.

Keep us posted on what you find, this is an interesting thread.

Good luck!

Regards,

Marcus

In my opinion, (which is usually worthless), the 232 is just a pattern number from the manufacture. Pattern numbers are very common on flatware, china, etc.
