Note how light the wool of the wrap is compared to the black overseas cap--could it be blaugrau, or just a dye lot variation?

It's a black wrapper, the photo has fading and exposure problems.

The shirt is much lighter, and gives a nice contrast as compared to the wrapper, and would be closer to what a Blaugrau uniform would look like in a B&W photo.

Assuming it's not a matter of exposure or a fading issue, telling bluegray from fieldgray on two-toned pics is a gamble, unless you got on the same pic something of a given color to compare with.
