Default Chinstraps: Real or Repro

Guys,

One of our members believes the chinstraps on my netted IJN to be reproductions. I have this helmet listed on Estand, so to be be fair, I wanted to post closeups of the straps and get the forum's opinion.

Any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks.

Looks like ebay member "Royal sojan" aka Joel choy handy work! and notice white at top and green at bottom with an incorrect end on the strap. I would expect to see this on a cream colored strap or a silky lat war chin strap.

David, here is a pic of a helmet you now own. As you know I replaced the chinstrap on it (with an original) but not the keeper. I got the straps off a early production stencil anchor Jareth found for me. Take a look and you will see the strap on the helmet you now own is green with white thread. Yours also has key ring hardware. Incorrect for a sewn across the ends chinstrap. The ones on Larry's are almost mint textbook examples encountered on early production stencil anchors. They are also attached with the late fat single welded ring which is also textbook. Take a look at the liner material in Larry's helmet. Higher then usual quality also indicative of an early production stencil anchor. Joel Choy's chinstraps are sh@t on a stick. You should be able to spot them from across the room?
P.S. How are the ends incorrect? They are just as they should be?

Hi Larry,

Great helmet. I must admit I saw the photos and first thought the chinstrap looked almost unused compared to the rest of the helmet but the additional photos clearly shows that is not the case. I pulled my stencil anchor helmet out and found that the chinstrap is pretty much like yours i.e. the stitching but with pigskin liner. This is the same helmet I sent you photos of while back.

David.

Nice one David!! I think that these green straps were used a lot more but just faded out with heavy use. Yours is one of the few others i have seen with the green color vibrantly intact.

Scott,

This stencil helmet is minty so the straps are perfect which is why the green is still very vibrant. Never really paid attend to them until the question came up on Larry's helmet. I guess I need to pay attention to my stuff more

Love that IJN David! Thanks for sharing!

Concerning the chin straps, thanks for the comments guys. I never doubted them, but it's always good to get additional opinions.

Thanks again.

Thank you gentlemen for this informative thread. It is always good to see informed views being positively expressed. I have certainly learnt something new about this variant of chin strap.
