Gunter,

It's not unusual for the liner to have no date markings. Judging by the appearance of the foam - it has an off-white color on my monitor - and the pegs at the top of the liner suspension I'd say your liner dates to the early 70s.

So your helmet has a fairly early M66 liner installed. The foam appears to be in unusually good condition - this type of foam often turns to that brownish/yellow color and gets brittle & crumbly.

Rev,

I believe that the inner lining does not have the same age of the casing, but I think it was refurbished in the 80's ......

However, I tried to clean just bought all the housing, taking it apart piece by piece, I also gave a fresh coat of paint to the M56 had small traces of rust, and I noticed remounting that foam that makes up the interior actually crumbles easily, so I reversed reassemble in the foamed material by bringing the inner part of the light, hiding inside the ruined ......

Here is a new M56 helmet to my collection.
Can anyone tell me if the helmet netting is East German?

Question M56 Stahlhelm

would the East Germans actually use a West German net like that?

or possibly another country that used EG helmets? I usually see these on West German M62 helmets, also seen used on Iraqi helmets since they bought surplus from West Germany back during the Iran Iraq War period.

Gents,

What do you think of the apparently white M56 helmet worn by this 60's era medic?

Were medic helmets actually painted white for a brief time?

Many thanks,
TJ

Gents,

The battleship gray paint used to touch up Volksmarine M-56 helmets is shown to good effect in this post card celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the NVA in 1976. The post card itself is dated "7,3,76".

I was surprised no one commented on the apparently white painted M-56 shown above. Perhaps this was a one off worn only during combat medic training?

All the best,
TJ
