Default Flag question that is killing me

I can't sleep at night not knowing the answer to this.

See the photos of this big Soviet navy flag. It has a small piece of dark colored cotton sewn into a seam at the upper corner. Obviously purposely done because I have seen it on 3 different flags.

What is the reason for it? Can anybody help me?

I thought of that. But why not something a little less intrusive? Like a couple of red stitches or something?

Anybody?

Hello KN:
Nice example of a Soviet Naval Flag Factory made
bow jack, with what I've always considered to be an
added cloth swatch denoting quality inspection has
been accomplished that the flag meets specifications.
A simple version of the detachable Western QC label.
But, I've not seen any Soviet documentation on this.

i have the same flag, the "tag" is bright yellow on mine. But it is only a small 1/2 inch square piece of thin fabric tacked on, in fact mine is half torn off. As these flags are a heavy rough cotton intended to be flown in all weathers i'm surprised it is there at all. i'm with OFW, as tacked on paper tags are still used. The flag does have factory stampings across the top white strip as well, so why both would be needed I don't know. Maybe try posting on the "Communist Bloc" section...?
