Here is mine in an interesting state of wear, exposing the tombak base metal.

Great stuff guys! I'm really happy this thread has come out now.
I am currently working on a reference book for Long Service Medals...
It's time we had an all encompassing reference that was dedicated to long service medals.
This thread helps a lot - although I probably won't get to SS LSM until the new year!
Again - great looking medals fellas!
PS - if you'd like to be a contributor please message me, also I'll be messaging some of you in the near future for ideas/specifics as well

I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere that the reason that these medals had been attributed to 'Deschler' and 'P&L' was something to do with these firms having used similar eyelets to the ones found on the SS-DA; can anyone confirm or add to this???

Yes, that was the reason. But, I tried to verify this and didn't get very far. I believe I found 1 other Deschler medal that had a similar eyelet, but it wasn't exactly the same as this SS 8. I couldn't find any P&L medal that had the same eyelet as has been attributed to them. We should probably just call them type 1 & 2.

For reference, I will post examples of the obverse & reverse of these two known types of 4 & 8 year awards from my collection...

Note that the suspension loops on the Type II have a slightly less rounded appearance than those on the Type I...
