The back says Einfahrt ***tomir (i'm rubbish at reading sutterlin) clearly in the USSR. Seems to be the symbol for artillery on the back.

I'll see what i can find when i get home unless Akira or someone else knows.

Simon /Akira... thank you
From the location I was able to narrow down the unit eblem to 296.Inf. Div. as they were in Schitomir in July of 1941 the cat emblem is the eblem of the 296th. Regarding the R nearest guess is the R was the Unit emblem for the 260 Inf. Div and the 260th Art. Regt. was part of the 260th Inf. Div. and elements of the 260th Art.Regt. were transfered to the 296. Inf Div.Does this sound right Simon Akira?

Nice homework, Ian. 296th was called "Panther-Division", it is a panther rather than a cat

"R" could just be a regimental HQ indication. Having two signs from different divisions may not be impossible but not likely. But I am not familiar with these divisions, you can't rely on me 100% about this.

I agree with Akira. Having two divisional symbols would be odd. Confusing too as they were and are used to help indentify where vehicles belong (think convoys and large movements of formations with thousands of vehicles, a bit of a logisitics nightmare). I'd imagine the R is for a higher or lower formation.
