Battle damaged bayonet

Default Battle damaged bayonet

Hi folks. Any opinions on these bayonet would help. Real battle damage? Thanks!!

I would assume you are correct. Why else would the damage be done, wouldn't add to the value.

Battle damage - yes could be.

Item is heavily cleaned however so if in far from desirable condition.

Former Infantry Marine here, I've seen a lot of bullet holes in a lot of materials and I would say your bayonet looks like it caught a round.

IMHO, when I see "battle damage" I assume a 50/50 chance it was due to either battle or someone popping off a few rounds in their backyard in 1985. But that thought process is usually for helmets and such. You never really know.

However, I doubt someone would stand an old bayonet up and shoot at it so your damage may be genuine. Just some food for thought

I was thinking more along the lines of a grenade fragment as it has an irregular edge vice a rounded edge.

Agree with Don, I think shell splinter.

Not uncomman at all, think % wise... if bayonets covered only 2% of the body size, one in 50 men hit by shrapnel would have had their bayonet hit....

I have a Bavarian M/71 which took a bullet diagonally through the muzzle ring
