Default Marching Compass

A quick question. Why were some of the marching compasses (such as the one linked below) marked with an A on the top cover?

Many thanks in advance.

I believe the "A" is for the compasses with clockwise position of degrees scale and ones without it have the counter-clockwise degrees scale. The "A" ones were produced from mid 1944 onwards.

My theory: A = Azimuth.
