Default POA shield opinions please

Hi Guys,

I have this piece for sale which I believe to be a rare and very nice quality hand embroidered first pattern shield- unfinished as it has not been cut out from the backing. Has light fading and is UV negative.

Please would you be so kind as to let me know your thoughts on this piece?

many thanks

Patrick

Hi Partick,

I am not sure on this piece. I also don't like the moth holes. Saying that, there is a small chance that this might be some obscure variation of POA shield - but for that you would need to do your homework, that is check every single image of POA to see if you can spot such variation in use. I would rather pass on this one and stick to known variants.

It’s possible that it’s some sort of field made variation, but I doubt it and would steer clear.

I agree with these guys.. By the workmanship [which is pretty good] it would appear to be a mass produced piece, so these would be more of this pattern out there.

IF you own it already no hurt in holding on to it and 'hit the books' [internet] as Askold suggests and see if you can find a match in style, dimensions etc....

Many thanks for the comments. It isn't anything mass produced- it is entirely hand embroidered which would have taken a huge amount of time. The design replicates the machine woven 1st pattern shield.

As there are doubts I will remove it from sale but from material and quality I am convinced this is a wartime item.

thanks for the help

Agreed with the guys, not something known to me from literature, known POA photos, archive items, private collections or literature. I would definitely pass on it.

The "moth" damage looks contrived. All cotton thread except for the white wool thread?
