Could I ask what is the date on the map? In one of the pictures one can only see the "19".
Hi,

Thank you. Marked Luftbilden von 1941.

Default Map 45

Hi,

Thats interesting markings, although my map is identical in scale (Massstab), colour, location, its titles are different.

FALAISE is at the top centre of the map, and to the right of Falaise it says ;-

Sonderausgrabe V 1940 Nur fur den Dienstgebrauch ! Nr 45

Otherwise its identical .

Does it say in German "not for service use" ??

cheers lennard

FYI, the original plates for many of these maps were originally produced before WW2. Often the original printings may have been before WW1 1890's-1910. Most of the German maps used during WW2 were actually originally surveyed by the French or even Belgium Survey Services. Same thing with British/U.S. GSGS maps.
The Germans felt no need to or did not have access to the regions for re-surveying, at lease not until the areas were occupied. It's not unusual to find WW2 German service maps with different dates being used during the war. Obviously, maps dated from the 30's-1945 are the ones most desired by collectors.

It actually states that it is “only for service use!”
