Default WWI Kar.98a (AZ) Ammo question

I want to take my shooter to the range for the first time and trying to make sure I get the right ammo. I called a local sporting goods store and told the guy I had a WWI German Mauser. He said it takes either 8mm 3.19 or 3.23. How do I know which to buy?

It uses 3.23. That cartridge had been adopted 6 years or so before the adoption of the 98A so there is no issue as long as it has not been post war altered, which is rare and easy to determine.

I would suggest that being a small ring I would not recommend bomb like loads being fired so stay away from 3200 FPS Turk ammo for instance!

Yes, All German Military WW2 Mausers and G-43, of course there were a LOT of Mauser style rifles made in many calibers under various contracts

There are also case versions of 8x57 such as rimmed, but commonly known 8x57 Mauser was the German military standard

Found some 8X57 JRS ammo but it is rimmed and would not fit. Found some marked 8mm Mauser that cycled great.
