Hi!!
The Grand Crosses were made really for the collectors market as you rightly said, there was no call for them, there were only 5 recipients of the 1914 Grand Cross, and non were still alive by the 50's!! But there certainly were veterans of WW1 still needing some replacement pieces in the 50's and 60's, among them the EK's!!
They aren't easy to find, many dealers may not even know what they have, especially in the case of EK2's, with no hardware to judge by, so often they aren't correctly described.
The majority of EK2's are probably to be found on medalbars of the period, often alongside 57ers!

Getting hold of a genuine S&L made Grand Cross won't be easy. Even though none of the recipients were alive when these were made in the 1950's, not many GK's were made.
Be careful not to mistaken the modern made reproductions that regularly pop up on ebay. Even though they are 3-piece made, the quality is far from the real S&L crosses. The frame material used is cheap, the cores lack detail and the correct finish. The assembly is poor in comparison.
Just with the PLM's - only a S&L will do

Here are some GK's - the two Imperial GK's are S&L made - I'm still missing the 1870 variant myself.

Best regards,
Alex

Thanks again that's an impressive collection! Yes I guess my chances of getting one won't be easy! Love a boxed PLM as mine doesn't have one sadly.

Thanks. Cases for the PLM do sometimes sell on eBay. I've seen 1-2 over the last year or two. Good luck

As already mentioned, avoid the modern made copies, and stick with the S&L's, quality is indeed excellent......
