Steve,

There is nothing on the makers label of the pre 78 S/H visor that would indicate a date. The only possible thing that could help date this cap is the D.B.P. plus the number that started appearing in visor caps at some time before this date. I have never done any serious research on this marking but it would really help if we could find some definitive proof of the date of institution of this mark. That information should exist somewhere in the BRD patent office. Alkero uses a slightly different marking "Deutsches B- Patent" plus the number in their caps.
I thought at one time that we should be able to classify hats by the use of K.G. after the company name. I E either before or after a certain date when K.G. was used and then discontinued. I haven't been able to do that either. There has been mention in other threads about the use/discontinued use of K. G. after the company name but no real discussion in these threads either.

Regards,

Gordon

stonemint,

Excellent foto of an early Customs hat. These may have been worn in the very early days of the Bundesgrenzschutz Einzeldienst but not for long. The Bundesgrenzschutz Einzeldienst wore BGS uniforms not Customs ones.
I have wanted to add one of these hats to my collection for some time.

Regards,

Gordon

Maybe stupid question;how and by who is the last custums one identified.
looks typical civilian with that decoration on the visor itself.
chincord looks civilian as well.
here's a Prinz Heinrich style (bottom pic) mutze.
also civilian but with thesame decor on the visor.
And a veteran associated one,but also civilian.
we are talking about form Fietje and Tedje almost.
I must have others as well in this configuration but none with those badges stonemint posted.
or were civilian type visors used for customs?
colour from the badge is also different from the visor itself.
just curious.

Kees,

Customs was a civilian organization and wore a blue double breasted suit and these blue caps. Only thing that Identified them as Customs officials was a small gold badge worn on the left lapel of the coat.

Gordon

Thanks for your answer Gordon,it must be a minefield buying an original one, since so much off these civilian visors exist.
The only thing you have then is belief in the seller if he says badges are original to it.
All the best,
Kees

Kees,

Exactly. This cap looks authentic but the picture I have of a Customs officer wearing one of these hats shows him at a distance and all of the details of the hat are not clear. Thanks for posting your cap for comparison purposes. Very useful to see them one after the other.

Blessings,
