Default 75th Anniversary of Market Garden

Was Operation Market Garden an intelligence failure or failure of command?

A line from Band of Brothers. "G2 has it that the Krauts in Holland are mostly kids and old men."

All kinds of aspects lead to a failure. These days we remember that 75 years ago we are liberated.
Every day one sees celebrations in the south of the country. All over "old" material riding through
streets and the Dutch welcome them as they are liberated again. I am too young to remember the
liberation! With two and a half years one is not aware of such facts.

Montgomery thought quickly to be over the rivers, which was a miscalculation. It is also a fact that
intelligence did not know facts near Arnhem and so the plan failed.
You can read all about it in many books, being published about Market Garden.

I’m glad we still remember those lost seventy five years on.

For Arnhem, it was apparently known prior to the operation what was present on the ground and warned by a young INT officer based on resistance and air recce photos- only in typical fashion once the train is already rolling nobody will stop it for probably what amounted ego or lack of leadership reasons to say stop we need to reconsider. The same INT officer had his career attacked after the fact. "You're right, but you're fired, but you're right!"

That seems more like the movie version than reality. The officer in question actually transferred after the battle as he was upset that so many men died in the battle.
