Do you have an on-line link to the article or could you scan it and post it here? I'd be very interested in reading it.

Interesting article. But (like most lieutenants ) he made an error. On page 1 he mentions the 7th Cavalry greeting. It's 'Garry Owen', not 'Gary Owen'.

Great thread!!

I was awarded mine in 1986 while serving with D Co. 1/17 INF (Raise up Buffalo!!) Out of all of my awards it was always the one that I was the most proud of. It used to irk me to no end that we couldn't wear it stateside. Here's a photo of me while at GP Oulette (sorry about the bad quality)

TJ the photo of WB shows a sign of the scouts of the 5/20, were you in the 5/20? I remember we were redesignated as the 5/20 a couple months after coming back from the DMZ (September 1986 maybe...memory's fading a bit). I remember the "Syke's regulars" crest had to be one of the ugliest in the US Army, thankfully I only had to wear it once (on the freedom bird back to the world )

I missed you by a year. 1/17 Inf was redesignated 5/20 Inf just before my tour. I was initially assigned to the 4/7 Cav and was reassigned to the Scout Platoon, HHC, 5/20 Inf. I was there from August '87 to August '88.

Default Technical

If you really want to be technical it is garryowen. One word.

Technically it may be "garryowen" but in actual usage even by the unit the line gets really blurred. I have also had other items where the two word name was used...

I was lucky enough to be given the metal badge w/ hanger by a vet I used to work with.
He knew I collected "Army stuff" and just walked in and handed it to me one day saying "I bet you ain't got one of these yet."

He was certainly correct.

I believe he was there either 69-70 or 70-71.

Good thread - I earned my Imjim Scout badge in '88. I was the 4 Four Deuce mortar platoon leader on the "Z" in '88 and Guard Post Collier commander in '89. (2/503 Aug 87 - Aug 89)

Got mine in 91, probably one of the last guys to be awarded the Imjin Scout badge. I have a whole pile of badges and JSA scrolls but I cant post pics yet Grrrrrr....
Glad to know we got some DMZ rats on here. I had a blast up there, it was my very first duty station and it was quite an experience for a young grunt. Remember the friggin NK loudspeakers going 24-7 ??
