Default The LAH Brracks at Lichterfelde

Spent an early morning exploring the grounds of the former Prussian Cadet School/LAH Kaserne/Andrews Barracks site in Berlin Lichterfelde last week. Enjoy the tour!

First, the famous entrance with the two stone "Reichs Rottenführer" encased in their concrete sarcophagi...

The plinths with the soldier's statues encased in concrete. I always wondered why they were just not trucked away...

The thing I remember most about that place is that it's right in the middle of a housing estate. The houses seem to be as old as the barracks.

I expected it to be set in its own grounds, well away from anything else.

A more modern baracks being demolished - I do not know if this was put up in the TR era or by the American Army after the war, but it is going, going...

I passed some incredible homes on the walk from the S-Bahn station to the Barracks - apparently Lichterfeld was - and is - a high rent neighborhood....

Happy memories, Don.

As you come out of the barracks, cross the road and walk straight up that long street, you come to a garage selling cars.

The name of the garage........EICKE motors!

I thought that was strangely appropriate!

I saw that, too, Robin, and thought the same thing! Here's a shot of the entrance to the swimming pool, with appropriately Teutonic statuary...

The rear of the entrance, with a policeman who came up to me after this shot and with a wink told me there was to be no photography in the area - after I had taken about fifteen shots!

Default LAH-Lichterfede

For me as an LAH collector the 2 times I spent on these holy grounds was the max. I even took along a piece of sandstone which had fallen down from the building

LAH collectors: THE place to be!

A morning walk at the Kadettenanstalt...

Don C,

Thank you for the tour. Next time I get to Berlin I'll have to find this and (take some secret photos too) see it. I have that book, Berlin: Then and Now, which is a great guide. From the train station in 2004 I saw the only remaining flak tower at Humbolthian.

No, it's the Andrew’s Chapel. Build like many other buildings by the US Army as more than 3/4 of the old barracks were destroyd.

Today it's one place of the Bundesarchiv.

The most US buildings are destroyed now (garages and the motor pool) for new single-family houses.
