Default Helmet and decal authentication for "is it real?" threads.

While this section is for helmet collectors of all experience levels, we would like to reduce the number of basic "is it real?" threads. This thread will be pinned and is for the posting of helmets which appear to be poor quality fakes. As well as from mostly dubious sources such as ebay and other small websites. Most posters of these helmets seem to have a good feeling they are not original and just need another set of eyes. Obviously we do not intend this thread to be used for all authentication questions, such as regarding more complicated helmets. Many camos, wires, netted helmets, etc. Please use you own judgement as what to post here. No one will criticize a well-intended question, regardless of where it is posted.

We do this in the FJ section for ebay FJ helmets, and it has worked well over the last 9 years. As of now we have 60 pages of helmets posted for authentication and about 150,000 views. Very close to all have been fakes. This has not adversely impacted the posting and discussion of original helmets in the main area. But it has reduced the distraction of poor quality fakes in the main area. In terms of 'quality management' it would be considered a 'best practice.'

Pinning such a thread will:
  • Provide a central location for authenticating dubious helmets.
  • Provide a future source of reference for the poor quality fakes.
  • Provide an aid to help less experienced collectors identify fakes being offered as original.
  • Reduce the number of threads presenting poor quality fakes.
  • Reduce the large number of "what a POS" posts on obvious fakes.
  • Minimize the distraction caused by all those threads and posts.
  • Get a quick answer on the "I need a fast response on this and I think it is fake" without distracting everyone else viewing the helmet section.
This does not mean we will encourage a 'lynch mob' mentality when someone posts what turns out to be a poor quality fake in the main section. The moderators will not tolerate this. We do not want to discourage basic questions; we just want to try to centralize them. So please be courteous to your fellow collectors, many of whom are trying to learn. A pinned thread is the best option for now, as WAF policy is not favorable regarding sub-forums.

Please try to do your best to post where appropriate and support the effort to make this section a better experience for all levels of helmet collectors.

I hope this thread works!

To get it started... I believe the liner and chinstrap to be fake. Am I correct?

Let's please support the intent of this thread. Let's also please stop discussing the matter, and most certainly stop with unrealistic expectations and demands. Everyone has an opinion as to what to do. A decision by the administration has been made and we will not move old threads. This thread is about trying to reduce the clutter and move forward. Moderating is not a full time job.

Please don't take it personal but I am going to clean up this thread.

Please also post nice clear photos when asking for authentication assistance.

This helmet section has almost 350,000 posts; the most of any section on WAF. So let's work together!

Default FJ and Camo Helmets

Gentlemen,

I picked these up sight unseen recently and am not sure what I have. Pretty sure two of them are repro or East German. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Both the WWII and WWI helmets are original shells, paint jobs are bad. cover is bad and FJ is 100% repro.

In the future please post 'it is real' requests for helmets like these on the above pinned thread.

Poor paint jobs, bad cover, and poor quality FJ fake.

Exclamation Police helmet with runic decal. Another fake?

Hello everybody!

A good friend of mine purchased the below M42 Police helmet with SS runic decal from the spanish site http://www.todocoleccion.net I'm not at all an expert, however I have doubts concerning its authenticity. I will very much appreciate the expertise of the Forum members. As much as I know there are some reported examples of real Police helmets with runic decals, but they are quite rare...

In your wise opinion is it good or another fake?

Thank you in advance and very best regards,

Jose
