Default Heeresflak Wehrpass

A small drop to satiate my thirst of pieces

Hope you like it.
Our soldier is Erwin Wagner and he was born on May 28th, 1920 (I need some help to read the place, please) his father was Nikolaus Aloissius Wagner and his mother Augusta, maiden name Hufmann.

Unfortunately his Wehrpass is a second replacement and was open in July 26th, 1943 but still we can put a lot of his career in clear but look he was registered by W.B.K. Dermold around July 13th, 1.939 when he was declared fit for service within Ersatzreserve I.

He entered service on December 9th, admitted on the 12th and took oath on the 14th, 1.940 which I.G.Ers.Kp./Inf.Ers.Rgt. 6 in Osnabrück.

He was trained with the ubiquos Kar98k, l.s.Gr. 18 (any idea what the hell is this) and with the 2 cm. Flak 38. Also he was a Flugmelder (Aircraft spotter)

With his training unit he served from December 9th, 1.940 till March 13th, 1.941 when he was dispatched to his new unit and not one within the 6 Infanterie Division but to a recently created one in Magdeburg, 1./Heeresflakartillerie Abteilung 271. He arrived to this unit on March 14th and served till he was wounded around November/December 1.942 (officially till December 3rd, 1942) he was transfer to a recovery and training unit where he arrived on March 12th, 1.943 (I guess he spent this time in Hospitals receiving treatment and recovering from his wound, unfortunately nothing notated about this wound), the unit was Stammbatterie./Heeresflakartillerie Ersatz abteilung 280 which was based at this time in Oksbol, Denmark (in April 1st, 1.943 his name will change to Heeresflakartillerie Ersatz und Ausbildung 280), fully recovered he left it on May 18th, 1.943 and was back to his previous unit where he served since May 19th till November 19th, 1943.

While serving with them he received several promotions and awards,

Promoted to Gefreiter on July 1st, 1.942
Received the Ostmedaille on August 3rd, 1.942
Received the Wound badge in black on December 3rd, 1.942 by IV Flak Abtl./A.R. 13
Received the Assault Badge on April 20th, 1.943 by 13 Pz.Div.
Received the Heeresflakabzeichen on May 18th, 1.943 by General der Artillerie bee O.K.H.
Promoted to Obergefreiter on October 1st, 1.943

His career and live was cut short on November 19th, 1943 when he was KiA close to Tamarino.

Heeresflakartillerie Abteilung 271 has a nice history, she was created in Magdeburg on February 18th, 1941 with 3 heavy batteries equipped with 8.8 cm guns with personal drawn from 5./A.R.67, 2./A.R. 850 and Artillerie Ersat Abteilung 13. At first she was a Heerestruppe unit assigned to Heeresgruppe Mitte, 9 Armee from the beginning of Barbarossa till she was reformed on May 1st, 1.942 in Köln and equipped with 2 heavy and 1 light batteries and attached to the 13 Panzer Division. On July 18th, 1.942 she was renamed as IV./Pz.Art.Rgt. 13 and back to her previous name again on May 1st, 1.943 when her composition was 3 heavy and 1 light batteries (she received the 3(Flak) Panzerjäger Abteilung 13). Unfortunately she was destroyed in August 44 in south Ukraine and rebuilt again just to be destroyed alongside the entire 13 Panzer Division in the fights around Budapest, Hungary, in January 45. Rebuilt again as Heerestruppe was attached on April 45 to the new Pz.Div. Feldherrnhalle 2 (who absorbed the personal and material left by the late 13 Pz.Div.) and renamed Heeresflakartillerie Abteilung Feldherrnhalle 2 fighting in Slovakia and surrender to the Russians in Donau in May 45.

Interesting during the research for this piece in particular and Heeresflak in general I see in the excellent book by Marc E. Garlasco two other soldiers who received the Heeresflakabzeichen with the same unit and on the same day as Wagner, one was Oberkanonier Alois Eder and the unit was designated 10.(Flak)/Pz.Art.Regt. 13 and the other Hugo Lorsbach also as Oberkannonier with the additional info that this last received the Panzerkampfabzeichen in bronze on June 15th, 1.944 and this time the unit has her former name, 1./Heeres-Flak-Art. Abt. 271.

Any further info or correction is welcomed as always.

Angel

" l. s. Gr. 18 " could be "leichte Splitter Granate 18 "

Hello Angel !

Another interesting WP with nice research and a very interesting unit.
Thanks for sharing this !

Could the fact that the VWA (schw.) was issued on 4.Dez. 42 by his unit (and not a hospital),
point to the fact that he was
wounded around that time with his unit and only later sent to a rearward hospital ?

The entry on p. 20 :
Could it be l. J.G. 18 (= leichtes Inf.Geschütz 18) ?! (if the J is written very small ?)
At least that would fit his training unit and also the designation with "18" matches :
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...egeschutze.htm

It seems that during Barbarossa, his unit was with XXIII. AK from Aug. - Nov. :
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...XXIIIKorps.htm

For his service with with 13. Pz.Div., you can track his way in 1942 on a map shown here :
http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...31&postcount=5
and there is a very detailed account on the very important battles of Naltschik, long but
very interesting :
https://www.feldgrau.net/forum/viewt...43a982846138de
He should have participated there and maybe even was wounded there.
(I do not know the conditions for the Flakabzeichen and how long it takes, but if there are 3 men with
the same unit on the same date, it is possible that this was also related to those battles.)

The 13. PzDiv. was committed again from Aug. 43 onward and saw heavy combat.

I found a small section in the divisional history by Dieter Hoffmann, which shows how difficult and
chaotic those actions were, with casualties by "friendly fire" on both sides.
(It also shows that there is a book from a Flak soldier (Lorenz Treplin : Mein Feldzug 1942 - 1945).
Could be an interesting read, perhaps someone has it ?!

In October/Nov. 1942, the 13. Pz.Div. resp. "KGr. von Hake" shielded the retreat of the 4. Geb.Div.
to the Cherson bridgehead.

Best regards,

Archi

Hello Angel !

Thanks for the kind words .
Unfortunately, I don't have anything of the 13. Pz.Div.
But I have always been interested in the actions in the Caucasus area.

Best regards,

Archi
