Default wheels

Hi

I've been following your project for a while and its amazing.
The Original panzer II wheels where in aluminium (like the spoked panzer I wheels) so they were maybe cast but the later, more common wheel, was a steel version ( because all aluminium was to be reserved for aircraft construction).
The panzer II wheels were made as you are doing now ...so they are welded and hollow inside. the steel dish is not that thick and can even be dented. ( I have such specimen )
Your center tube is different but that depends on the axle you'll put in it I guess.
Here is a genuine wheel (steel version)...the weldseem is obvious.

[Genuine wheels can still be bought but I guess your construction will be cheaper. new rubber rims are Always needed for a runner.
cheers

Hi Bullit,

That's really interesting, the only picture that I could find of the wheels construction, shows it being solid but I suspect that its a pre / early production picture. I can't open the link that you posted, can you check it and repost it please. Is there any chance of you emailing me a couple of pictures of your wheel dent and all? I am interested in the centre hub and any welded areas. Although my version will not change now, it would be nice to see an original. Attached is one of many pictures of wheels that I have and the centre hub appears to be straight through, as mine is, so if yours is different, I would find that really interesting, being the sad one that I am. All the wheels and return rollers will have a polyurethane tyre cast on them, eventually. I suspect for the price of one original wheel I could make 10 reproductions and I don't see any point in using expensive original parts on what is after all a reproduction, although it would be a lot quicker.

Just as an aside, my wife asked me how many different main operations there were per wheel, I counted to 40 and gave up. When I thought about it later, its a sobering thought that these 10 wheels will require 400 plus operations to complete.

Default update 17-5

Thanks John T

At last 10 wheels, not quite finished as they need the rib around the rim added but as you can see from the pictures I have succeeded in rolling one of the ribs. 19 more to do and then I can weld them in place.

Industrial revolution, It never got into this part of Wales. When I moved here in 1990 I had neighbours that didn't have electricity, running water or any kind of sanitation. During lambing time my nearest neighbour would be seen walking around the fields with a grain sack safety pinned around his neck and over his shoulders to keep him dry, holding an oil lamp trying to find the new born lambs.

It was like living in a totally different age.

Jon

Oh tracks, they will either be cast or.........but not originals.
