Default Soldbuch with a double medal entry with some photos

Here we have our new Army member.

Johann Sipka was born in Wien on February 15th, 1.912 and he was a roman catholic and his parents were Augistin and Aloisa.

He decided to be a soldier from the beginning and he started serving within the Austrian Army, the first proof was a group photo dated May 15th, 1.933 showing the 3 Zug. 1 Komp. I.R. 4. Sucesive photos dated June 20th, 1.933, May 28th, 1.934, 1.935 and August 15th, 1.937 showed him in Austrian Army uniform clearly showing his progress.

After the Anchluss he was incorporated into the Wehrmacht with Unteroffizier rank within the I.R. 134. He rose from NCO till Hauptmann as we can see in his Soldbuch, unfortunately is a second use open on October 20th, 1.942 by 6./I.R. 685 with the number 10 and his dog tag Nsch.Kol.4/522/5. In this new Soldbuch his occupation is Wehrmacht clearly he was a professional soldier and also is notated he was married with Charlotte, maiden name Grundler

During his earlier service years he was promoted to Unteroffizier, Unterfeldwebel and Feldwebel prior his promotion to Leutnant around September 1st, 1.942 (change of his pay grade).

He probably served in second line units or in the homeland as all his awards are not combat related and the unit mentioned in the Soldbuch was not in combat in Russia till mid 1.942. Without dates he received:

- Medal for the 1 October 1.938 (with clasp not written, but shown in photos)
- 4 years of service in the Wehrmacht
- War Merit Cross 2nd class with swords
- Shooting Lanyard 6th level
- Unknow award 2nd class

Prior to being assigned to combat position he passed a medical review with Inf.Ers.Btl. 192 for something I can not decipher being released as k.v. on February 1st, 1.940 and again he was interned in Kriegslazarett 3/617 from May 26th till June 17th, 1941

He only served with one combat unit 6./I.R. 685 part of the 336 I.D. an unit which passed the first years as occupation forces in France till May 7th, 1.942 when he was transferred too the Eastern Front just in time to take part on the 2nd battle of Kharkov before the unit was posted under the 6 Armee on June 24th (XXXX Armeekorps (mot))and later to 2nd Hungarian Army in September 1.942. With this unit he took part in the attempt of relieve of the 6 Armee during the Operation Uranus and Operation Little Saturn when it was severed mauled.

This time served to our man to won a lot of awards in a short period of time:

- Credited with an Assault day on June 14th, 1.942 in Petrowka
- Credited with an Assault day on July 1st, 1.942 in Werch-Lubianka
- Iron Cross 2nd class on July 3rd, 1942 from I.R. 685
- Tank Destruction badge on July 20th, 1942 from II./I.R. 685
- Credited with an Assault day on August 20th, 1.942 in Bridgehead Korohjak
- Infantry Assault Badge in silver on August 30th, 1.942 from I.R. 685
- Wound Badge in black on August 30th, 1.942 from II./I.R. 685 (no hospital time)
- Iron Cross 1st class no dat from 336 I.D.
- Tank Destruction badge on December 16th, 1.942 from I.R. 685
All stamped by Feldpost 05179C

His service on the front was stopped around beginning January 1.943 when he was interned in the hospital.

Kriegslazarett I./685 from January 10th till January 15th, 1.943 transferred and no motive written.
Reservelazarett XXIIII Wien XIX, Vegagasse 20 from January 25th till February 19th for Glandular disease, transferred
Reserve Lazarett XXIII C Wien XIX Rudolfmargasse 18 from February 20th till March 26th for Blood disease, release.

Again he was in hospital from August 9th, 1.943 till November 4th, being released to Gren.Ers.Btl. 465.

Looks like he served with Gren.Ers.Btl. 465 as his three security checks where stamped and signed by the same unit and officer. This unit was based on Wissenfels, southwest of Leipzig, also based there was the other unit he served after his Eastern Front time, the Gren.Ers.u.Ausb.Btl. 11.

This last unit promoted him twice:

- To Oberleutnant on September 1st, 1.944
- To Hauptmann on March 1st, 1945

He received ten leaves, all to Wien.

He survived the war, but no further info available to me. Any help reading the entries I can not do is welcomed and all additional info regarding this soldier.

Angel

Wow, that's a really nice addition Angel. Congrats! Looks like he received his second tank destruction badge during Unternehmen Wintergewitter. In post #7 his custom made schrimmütze has an embroidered eagle with a dark green backing of a style I have not seen before. Very neat. Also, the nickname of the 336 was Hundekopf-Division (Dog Head Division). Not sure how they got that name. Thanks for sharing.

Hallo Angel

There is an Augustin Sipka in the 1940 Wien adressbuch.

He was a master shoemaker and he lived in Allenheiligerplatz 3, same address of Johann Sipka unteroffizier:

The same in 1942:

Previously (1931 when Johann was 19 years’ old) Augustin lived in Salzachstraße 2:

I hope these information will be useful.

Best regards

I really love these groupings to pre-war career NCOs who were commissioned during the war.

Nice Soldbuch Angel
I think that the unknown medal might be the Austrian Militärdienstzeichen II. Klasse (the 1934 model). The shape of the ribbon bar fits.
Not sure what you had to do to earn the medal though.
