Default LUFT Bomber Crew Machette - original or not?

Hi Guys,

can I get some second opinions on the originality of this item?

I have handeled an original once before and this one differs in several ways:

- no maker mark
- the crossguard is not messing yellow but has paint on it
- grips look good but the wood around the screws seems rough (has the piece been taken apart and put together again?)

As it was a cheap piece (280 euro) I am not so worried about condition which is far from mint when it comes to blade, just want to make sure this is actually an original piece. I thought these blades were suposedly always maker marked. All help as always much appreciated! If not good, please state what the problem is. Thanks. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

Cheers, Willem

Hi,

it is an original machette, but more hard to find is a scabbard and frog!

Original item - not sure if the saw-back was an original feature - all the blades I have seen did not have the saw edge at the back. I think the price reflects the condition

Thanks Harry. Saw back was an original feature during WWII. Are you questioning this or are you questioning whether or not this specific one had saw-back when it started life?

Maybe the saw-back is a later feature, as all the survival machetti I have seen have been brass handled/hilt, and smooth blade-back

found this interesting thread which discusses these items in more detail - confirming the saw-back was period used...

Are machettes specific luft survival items or just general WH items ?
Just wondering ..
All luft items plus the specific survival items normally are FL marked, while adopted items have no such markings IMO.
If specific, I would expect them to have a label, like the flag pole or the mirror or a FL nummer stamped into the metal or something like that.
I'm not too much into machettes, but they're always labelled luftwaffe .. and maybe or probably they're, but are they ?
Just looking for some confirmation.

Jos.
