I admit, I had a little bit of an advantage since I've bought a few small things from him in the past and he recognized me. That and if you know the Berlin Market, you know that it is full of sharks. So he started higher than he wanted so that when someone made an offer it was his asking price (which was $160, since he knew I was coming back).
When I went back around noon today, he told me about the other folks that were interested. Apparently he had someone who was very interested and was going to buy it, but someone else walked up and pointed out all the same things I had issues with. This scared the buyer away and the two people walked off. 5 minuets later the guy who ruined the deal came back and wanted to buy it. That really pissed him off, and didn't help other interested parties like you Kurt.
Anyway we made a deal and I did end up getting it. I had a lot of fun talking to the guy, telling him what I learned here, pointing out the good things and the bad things. Spent about a half hour taking to him. I try to treat people with respect and be honest with the prices and information I cite, and that really made an impression on the guy I guess. He offered it to me lower than $150 just to spite the jerks he had earlier!
I know I could probably get a better deal online, but I like to have something like this in hand when I buy it (so online buys are rough for me). Most importantly, I like it! I just have to look for some collar discs now!
