A quote from Karl Nuehoff, II Battalion, 3rd Fallschirmjäger Regiment, in D.M. Davin's book Crete:

"The moment we left the planes we were met with extremely heavy small arms fire. From my aircraft we suffered particularly heavy casualties and only three men reached the ground unhurt… . The survivors rallied to a position near the prison where we became organized, collected equipment, and formed up for an attack up the hill to the north towards Galatas."

A nice example. the lanyard looks to be one end of a period british or commonwealth officers pistol lanyard. i have a complete example that is the same as this.
