May not be German. The German version had leather to protect the back.

Picture of One in Uniform Book
On page 66 of "German Soldiers of WW2" by de Lagarde, your particular reel is at the bottom of that page, exactly what you have. The author says it is a simplified version, could be late war, one has to be careful even with books, but most people like this book, hopefully this helps...pgs 65-67 have great display of items for Field phones/radio, theme being "Gebirgsjager Radio Operator", which is what I do in Living History. The Cable Reel I own (just got it today as a matter of fact, is on page 66 as well, straped to the Gebirg soldatens back. Cheers, Mike

I just purchased a folding pack that is dated 1941. I have been told they were disigned for use by fallshirmjagers, but in this account they seemed to be in use simultaniously late war. I have never seen the folding version of post war manufactur, but thats only saying so much.

This type of folding frame is usually clearly dated and identifyable as WW2. It has nothing to do with Fallschirmjaeger (that is the usual myth to hike up the price....).
These were for example used with the "Fernbesprechung" of the 100 W.S, where it held the 3-core cable. When not in use, the folding frame would be stored in a vehicle. They could of course be used to dispense normal telephone wire, but it lacks the spooling mechanism of the standard Rueckentrage.
There is a post-war collapsible frame but this resembles the "normal" Rueckentrage, constructed from welded tubes rather than the stamped metal of the war time type.

Funksammler
