Have seen them on flight pants with only one clip several times. The clip end was attached to the knife and the other end was knotted inside the pocket; and they appeared to have been attached this way since war time.

Exactly - 2 clips are not the norm, and most propably done by the individual soldier.
The one show here never had a 2nd clip, as indicated by the loop.

Are these the same lanyards which were used to attach the signal pistols to the channel trouser pockets?

Have to disagree, I think that all lanyards in the earlier flight pants had 2 clips ..at least the ones I've.
Those pants had metal rings in the pockets to attach the clip, later pants had leather loops and those had the lanyards that were knotted to the loops, so those lanyards had only one clip, probably for economic reasons, this way they saved 3 rings and 3 clips, just my thought.

It's just my observation, hard to make it a rule, because most flight pants come with out lanyards, most dealers and even collectors take them out to sell them seperately .. , might bring a few bucks for the ones who don't care, but a real pity for the collector who likes to find a pair of flight pants all complete.
Same with suspenders for the flight pants ..
Both of these items aren't a must, because they're normally hidden, but most flight pants are priced that high that I would only pay that price if they came with all 3 lanyards and suspenders.
