Default New Austrian Gebirgskappe

Just received my latest bit of Austrian militaria -- one of the new mountain caps. Very strongly influenced by the WW1-era caps and obviously tradition played a strong role in adopting these. I'm still not sure if these are a dress cap or if they'll also replace the current cloth M-43 style field cap?

Anyway, very well made with leather sweatband (cork backing) and, I believe, a leather visor. The fabric seems the same as the current M-43 type cap and service dress fabric.

As with my woolen M-43 style OBH caps, the pinch is sewn in to the front. Edelweiss is backed with a grass-green felt.

Enjoy!

Nice looking cap. This new design looks more similar to hungarian caps.

Not surprising as both were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and no doubt share a common uniform background -- at least until 1918.

Austrian Gebirgstruppen with their new cap.....

.... and the Hungarian Army with their traditional caps

Both modern incarnations of the WW1-era KuK feldkappe

The Gebirgskappe has replaced by the 6. Jägerbrigade the beret for walking-out and ceremonial duties.

The one in the picture is intended for officers as indicated by the gilt buttons and gold cockade. The NCO's are wearing silver/grey buttons and silver/gold cockade...

For me it seems to be the right step to introduce a walking-out cap bearing a tradition from the "free" times of Austria in place of the M-43 styled caps, carrying with them the traditions from the times after the Anschluss...

Gentlemen,

Beautiful cap, really beautiful. One of the nicest pieces of contemporary military headgear I have ever seen.

I am envious, Chris.

Regards,

Hugh

Great to see the Bundesheer return to the basically same muetze of the 1st Republik as well. No doubt with all of the excellent focus on the KuK by Stefan Rest at Verlag Militaria publishers, a greater pride is being restored to the BH!

Servus!
