Now that's a cool shot. I wonder why he never received an RK, I thought that was the next step for those who earned this cross and then went the extra mile in bravery etc? On what basis were these awarded

The GK was not a prerequisit for the award of the Knights Cross nor was there a kind of prescribed sequence. There were RK winners who never got the DK and there are RK winners who got the DK after the award of the Knights Cross.
