Rodenstock M1908 Binoculars

I have these M1908 binoculars by Rodenstock. They have a black coat of paint over the original field grey. The case is also black with straps that have what looks like GFF 43 on each one. There is also a marking on the edge of the lens which looks like JR, but may possibly be IR?

Can anyone tell me if the black paint may be an issued re-paint and if the GFF 43 means anything? Also, any ideas on if the JR is initials?

My opinion would be "I.R." for "Infanterie Regiment".

I think it is private marks such as the owner name...

I can't find any unit #s on it now that I look.

Possibly initials as I just found a matching JR on a strap of the case (now that I looked). I would imagine that this was likely done back when these had been issued?

Any opinions on the black paint?
