Default Lets see your Panzer crew member Soldbuchs

I thought it would be fun to start a thread featuring Panzer unit Soldbücher and Wehrpäße to Panzer crew members. I know there are lots of good ones out there, so... Post 'em if you got 'em

This should be one heck of a thread !!!

There are indeed some "Dandies" out there in regards to Panzer Crew Member ID's....even I have a nice little (fairly rare) Soldbuch to a Panzer Hundestaffel member....

"Hundestaffel"

Rob,

Perhaps you should get the ball rolling here with an example from your own collection. Might get the thread starting.

Cheers,

Al

Thomas... You know the way straight to my heart

Wow, wow and WOW! A wonderful s.Pz.Abt.506 Soldbuch (even with the missing photo the PAB-25 entry more than makes up for it) and the Siegfried Freyer Soldbuch absolutely OUTSTANDING!!! Probably one of the nicest RK Panzer wrapper photos in a Soldbuch I have ever laid eyes on... It would be very difficult to top that photo. Just killer!!! Have you been able to research Freyer and his career?

This is exactly what I was hoping we'd see, so thanks for starting the thread off with such a powerful and mind-numbing "one-two" punch

I tried for many years to get Herr Freyer's full story but he remained silent. I am good friends with his old Schwadron commander, Rittmeister Hans Messerschmidt (whose signature can be seen on #26), who telephoned Freyer on my behalf. However, Freyer just didn't want to talk about the war. I saw that Thomas owned Freyer's Soldbuch and Wehrpass a few years ago and thought Freyer must have died, but according to Thomas's post, he is still alive. I'm glad to hear it!

Thomas, do you know the name of "Der Stier von Stalingrad"? I have not heard this before. I know of the "Löwe von Stalingrad", Leutnant Herbert Sylla, who was captured at Stalingrad and died in captivity in March 1943.

One more thing I'd like to point out in Freyer's Wehrpass is his wound suffered on 29.10.1942 (Post #25). He was shot through the neck by a Russian 14.5mm anti-tank rifle round! All his fellow tankers believed the Russian was aiming for his Knight's Cross. Incredibly, the projectile missed hitting anything vital in his neck (don't know how that would happened because EVERYTHING in the neck is vital!).

Hope everyone doesn't mind me chiming in with a little bit of info about Freyer. I've also got a few nice shots of him.

All the best,
Jason

Thomas... I have a Soldbuch/Wehrpass grouping to a Afrika vet who served in the very same batterie (6./Pz.Art.Rgt.155) as your guy! They certainly would have known one another and fought side by side in Afrika! Looks like your guy stayed with the 21.Pz.Div all the way through the end of the war... my guy went on to serve in StuG.Abt.237 and then Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 219, but they still served together in Afrika. Nice to see another book from the very same batterie as the set in my collection.

EDIT: judging from the last field unit entry on page 17, your guy could very well have been a crew member (radio operator) on a Hummel, as Pz.Art.Rgt.155 was outfitted with Wespes and Hummels when rebuilt after being destroyed in Afrika.

Great find!
Rob
