Nice helmet, but quite a leap to call it a DAK. The color scheme is not determinative of DAK, could also be Italian or even Normandy for that matter. But hey, calling it a DAK brings in a premium...

My own guess is that it occurred in both cases, with single cuts of the chinstrap being made by GIs in order to quickly retrieve a helmet as a souvenir and cuts of each of the chinstraps being made...
