Thanks folks. I have to say, I was told it was France, but as you say, the clothing etc do not look French, more German/Austrian. However, the uniform detail does point towards very early war, too...

it was 1940, here is another part of the photo, showing early war uniforms. the 1936 pattern tunics and M34 caps with the soutache still in place....
