Looks OK to me. There was once a rope sewn in where you have the wooden rod. As for the story; if you have documentation, that makes it more interesting to collectors, otherwise it's just a story.

Korea was part of the Japanese Empire from 1910 until after the war. Koreans would enlist in the Japanese military during this time and wear normal Japanese uniforms and gear.
