The pic at Ft Bragg in the SF garb suggests to me he was in Training Group between Phase 1 and graduation.
We got berets after Phase 1, but no group flash until we graduated and went to a group.

Idea was to be able to throw them ahead of you while on the advance. The stick helped to do this.

Never heard that term. Only means I never heard it.
Other than formal dress, anyone while assigned to an airborne organization wore Overseas caps....
