Field Casulty Tags

These tags were used at the forward first aid posts to be attached to the bodies of the wounded or afflicted before they were moved to the rear hospitals.

Properly inscribed, they contained the known information such as the identity of the casualty, nature of his wounds or afflictions and any treatment or medications already administered.

The red tags were for wounded soldiers, and the green tags were for Ill soldiers.

Btw, do you believe the helmet to be original ?? I allways have doubts about white helmets with red crosses.... never seen any pictures of them in use.....

Great stuff Ron, Tom and Boyou...Good start of 2011 thumbsup

Tom, concerning medical painted helmets, not only several pictures do exist but wartime film footage is available as well on this board. You have to leave the fieldgear-section once and a while

Hey Jan, you're probably right  I am kind of stuck here...... smilewink

I have to check for those pictures and footage.......

What allways strikes me is that most of the time the germans medics are in US captivity when wearing those breast red-cross "vests" and white helmets.....

My guess would be that the white painted helmeta showed up after June 6th 1944, because at the russian front, medic were targets as I understood......

Tom, these were used in frontline combat as well and not ONLY by POWs. The filmfootage I refered to and several pictures (even a studio portrait is known) proves this. You are right when saying that it was only seen on western and southern frontline (Italy).

mod : I'm sorry if this is off-topic.

Back to the krankentags :

So there were tags for the ill, for the wounded... Indicating someone was gas-poisoned was an option that had to be speficy within the wounded tags, right?

Regards

Jan

White helmets with red crosses are original.
I would do the same if i was a medic.. you had to run into enemy fire anyway to get the wounded.
Why not paint a red cross on it and hope you got a nice American on the other side of the M1 Garand barrel.

Btw, the Russians didnīt care for medics therefore its very rare to see any red crosses etc. on anything at the front in Russia. Camo was more importend.

Tom, i can read that the soldier was from 7./ Infanterie-Regiment 7.
And he must have been heavy wounded as both red stripes are still on it!
But thats all.. [opps]

I got 2 used krankenzettels and 2 used verwundetenzettels myself.
They are not expensive, but you donīt see them every day.
(Iīm always interrested in buying them).

Here a krankenzettel grouping, Grenadier-Regiment 553.

Here a verwundetenzettel of a heavy wounded Matrose that was used as Infanterie in 1945.

And Here a verwundetenzettel and krankenzettel grouping to the same soldier.
Havnīt researched this one yet though.
