For those unaware, I suggest taking the time to give this a good read.

Mythbusting the Champagne SS Decal - It once and for all exposes a fraud perpetrated upon the collecting community.

If you're a helmet guy, you won't regret it....and it is free.

I'd publish it here but it's more like a small book as its a long read with many supporting graphics and the format of this forum makes it impossible to publish it in the manner the information has to be presented.

Great research. Congratulations Doug. You nailed it, clearly exposing a fraud!
Once magnified clearly sprayed on using a stencil with fuzzy outlines and overspray even!!! No wonder these "decals" were so durable and pristine with artificial damage added!
Quite a few reference books will need an addendum now (and COA's tossed!)
Also amazing that these so called decal types were so good, that this rendition got copied as actual (but repro) decals in champagne color! WOW!
Just wish we could get something conclusive and undeniable with the Prague tan helmets, busting that myth (whatever way the verdict swings...)
Again congratulations on this big reveal and on getting awarded your honorary German "helmetology doctorate"! Well deserved Dr.DougB!

Glad to hear this. Some have thought they were fantasy items for many years. These decals were more difficult to present the truth than the green decals on FJ helmets. The green decal myth was rather short-lived and did not cause as much harm to the collecting community as the Champagne SS decals did.

Great work Doug,very impressive.

It should be interesting to see how many dealers honor their "lifetime guarantees".

I'm going to have to step in and disagree with Doug.

It is clear to me these helmets were done by none other than Heinrich Himmler himself! It's obvious, and makes these helmets even more valuable!

Gentlemen, I have known Doug for over 5 years and he is a super good guy and a huge asset to the collecting community. He really looks out for this hobby and has helped me to understand helmets.

I privately never believed in these decals. I always thought something was amiss. When I first heard the term Champagne Rune, I thought why in the hell would the Germans make a CR ? Thats why I never bought one.

Thanks for a great discussion and info !

Mike

Same here , they were controversial for a very long time but supported by Kelly Hicks published works.
But finally 1+1 makes 2.
Great work from Doug.
