Here's a few of the typical Bibles, prayer books, etc. available to servicemen and women in WWII. They would be given out by Chaplains or presented by family members (usually the mother). Typically there is a place in the front for the owner's name and address and a message from President Roosevelt. Note the "bulletproof" Bible at the top with a metal cover, to be carried in the breast pocket for a little added protection.
